Some communities plan their ending. In the Old Country where the lies have True children with Age, there are still places that do this. When there is only one person left who remembers how they began and death sits on his chest biding his time until the chill that never ceases begins to creep into the old one’s bones, then they decide their people must end. All are forbidden to make children. None are permitted to leave.

The last man is chosen, young enough to still love the taste of Sweet things but old enough to have a wife he will be forced to abandon, and learns what is being forgotten. When he has learned how their people began, they beat him mercilessly until he flees into the forest and, children and elder alike, they eat the slimy cakes prepared by the medicine-worker.

There is no one behind him. No one has been there for years. He does not even know where They used to be. He exhales the Earth, soft and wet and rain-flooded. When he dies, many many seasons from now, no one will count the rings in his bones. He is blind like the stones are blind. Laid bare. It hurts to grow.
